Final Countdown to ‘Mania

The days have passed by, the time has drawn near, Wrestlemania 27 is upon us and in a matter of hours will be taking place. But just before the excitement and the anitipation is about to reach its peak, there’s a few pieces of news to report from Atlanta. A match change for the card itself is imminent, as Vladmir Kozlov was injured after a match when The Corre came down to the Axxess arena and attacked him. Here is an official statement from WWE.com:

“It was supposed to be a morning of excitement and fun for the WWE Universe. The third day of WrestleMania Axxess had just gotten underway with excellent in-ring competition featuring Vladimir Kozlov. The Moscow Mauler claimed victory in his match-up, but only moments after his hand was raised, The Corre decided it was time to make a statement.

The nefarious group took Kozlov down from behind and proceeded to unleash a hellacious beating on their prey, who’s scheduled to battle the group alongside Big Show, Kane and Santino Marella at WrestleMania this Sunday. The Corre then removed Kozlov from the ring and used the steel steps to crush The Moscow Mauler’s shoulder against the ring post.

As they watched on in horror, some fans attending WrestleMania Axxess openly shrieked, while others took photos of the attack on their cell phones. Twitter and YouTube has since erupted with photos and videos of the incident. The footage only serves to leave the WWE Universe wondering about Kozlov’s condition, or what condition he’ll be in for the Eight-Man Tag Team Match at WrestleMania.”

It’s expectd that Kofi Kingston will be added to the match at the last minute on the show tonight. It’s a good move and a nice use of the social media that WWE has been utilising more and more these days, setting up links to phone footage of the attack, making it feel real and unexpected. Also in that Kozlov is far from a great worker, even though he has found his niche in the comedy team with Santino Marella. Kofi deserves that spot(as do many others) and it’ll be good to see him on the show. Kozlov actually suffered some serious bruising from the attack, which can be seen here.

More news to report from WWE’s Fan Axxess convention in Atlanta that’s been running over the past three days. Many comments from wrestlers have been reported, though of course from word of mouth their far from gospel. Regardless, here’s some of the goings on at the convention.

Roddy Piper made a surprise appearance at the event, and even wrestling in the Axxess arena where a few matches took place. He also teased an appearance at Wrestlemania itself, posting on Twitter:

Allegedly the last time Piper teased a surprise pay per view appearance, WWE officials swiftly cancelled it. Alex Riley told a fan he would be accompanying The Miz to the ring for his WWE Championship match with John Cena tonight, despite not being advertised to do so.

The official program for Wrestlemania 27 is advertising the No Holds Barred Triple H Vs. Undertaker match as “Nothing Else Matters”, the name of a Metallica song. The official Twitter account of Metallica confirmed The Game would be using one of their songs at Wrestlemania. That’s pretty epic, and I hope it happens. It’d be strange to see that match with Johnny Cash and Metallica serving as the entrance music, instead of the classic Undertaker theme and Lemmy classic “The Game”, but it’ll make it stand out for sure.

Figure Four Weekly editor Bryan Alvarez has reported it’s likely a match will be bumped off the card tonight, in which case it would become a dark match. If it gives Daniel Bryan and Sheamus an extra 5 minutes, I’m all for that. If it’s to take that match off the card, I riot.

Here is a list of all the wrestlers in the WWE who are not currently booked to appear tonight:

Alex Riley, David Hart Smith, Evan Bourne, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, Mark Henry, Mason Ryan, Michael McGillicutty, Michael Tarver, Primo, R-Truth, Ted DiBiase, The Great Khali, Tyson Kidd, William Regal, Zack Ryder, Chavo Guerrero, Chris Masters, Curt Hawkins, Drew McIntyre, Hornswoggle, JTG, Kofi Kingston, Trent Baretta, Tyler Reks, Alicia Fox, Beth Phoenix, Bri Bella, Nikki Bella, Eve, Gail Kim, Kaitlyn, Kelly Kelly, Maryse, Melina, Natalya and Rosa Mendes.

Quite a long list though a traditional dark match battle royal will be taking place also.

There were some really cool pictures from Shawn Michaels’s Wrestlemania diary, showing him embracing his Wrestlemania 24 opponent, the Nature Boy Ric Flair, currently under employment in TNA. It was cool that he was there, his main purpose to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony, and the two showed off their matching watches that Shawn had made as a gift to commemorate Flair’s then last match. The watches have engravings on the back and a “24” on the face. “The Kliq” also posed for a photo, in Triple H, Kevin Nash, Shawn and Sean “X-Pac” Waltman. Shawn also took the time to get an autograph from his favourite wrestler Triple H.

Michael Hickenbottom's dream comes true

"You thought I was actually gonna stay retired? You f'n idiot!"

I knew it.

"But I got these watches made and everything Ric!"

One of these four guys looks considerably more haggard, old and trying hard than the rest...guess who.

Speaking of which, at a Q&A session, Shawn was asked whether he thought Triple H would end The Undertaker’s Streak. He replied:

“I’m not sure I can let him do what I couldn’t.”

He then further teased interfering in the match by saying:

“I’ll do everything I can not to stick my nose in. Maybe. Do you ever find that you’re the meanest to the people you love the most? If I ruined his chances of ending the Streak, I’m sure he’d beat the tar out of me at that moment, but I’m sure he’d forgive me eventually.”

After reports he would be at ringside, I’m now second guessing it, and thinking it won’t happen. He teased it far too blatantly there, but who knows, I’d personally love to see it.

Good old J.R has told multiple fans at the Axxess convention that he will be calling some matches at Wrestlemania. It seems obvious he’d call Michael Cole Vs. Jerry Lawler, but man I hope he sticks around to call Undertaker/Triple H, that’d be phenomenal(no pun intended). The Hall of Fame ceremony went well, though Drew Carey was boo’ed. I’m sure that will be edited when it airs on Monday night. Lay-Cool, along with a lot of other WWE Divas inducted the original Diva, Sunny. Terry Funk inducted Abdullah the Butcher and of course Triple H inducted Shawn Michaels. I’ll leave some quick thoughts on the Hall of Fame broadcast with next weeks RAW Reaction. For now, if you’re ordering Wrestlemania, enjoy it! There’ll be some initial thoughts here tomorrow morning, so avoid it if you’re catching a rerun!
